Where to find a Lactation Consultant?

find a lactation consultant

The best way to find a lactation consultant is by visiting the official website of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). This goes not just within the United States but internationally. Otherwise you may download the Mobile Lactation Consultant app on iTunes for free.

Becoming a lactation consultant is a fulfilling career aside from its high pay (average of $27.07 an hour in the United States). A lactation consultant specializes in breastfeeding and is trained to teach mothers how to nurse properly and effectively. Lactation consultant likewise helps babies who are not gaining sufficient weight.

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners or IBLCE outlined the guidelines before one can qualify for the lactation consultant board exam. First is to have 90 hours of lactation education. Second is 1000 hours of supervised clinical experience. Third is to have units in these fields: Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Infant and Child Growth and Development, Nutrition, Psychology, Introduction to Research and Sociology.

It is definitely a life changing moment to bear and rear a child. The first few months from birth are considered crucial for the child’s survival.

Feeding a child is an intricate process. Milk is the only nourishment a mother can give her child at this early and vulnerable stage. It is imperative that this is done methodically and correctly.

Breastfeeding is an example of a key step to ensure that the baby’s nourishment is not just met but also optimized. This is possible through lactation or production of milk, which is trigger by various hormonal changes when bearing a child. Exclusive breastfeeding is highly encouraged from 0 to 6 months.

To feed on demand is handing down the best time to nurse a baby. Feeding on demand means to feed the baby whenever and wherever it wants.

Food, herbs and routines do help in increasing baby milk supply. Lactation consultants can also be sought for help to improve the breastfeeding experience.

Of course, not all breastfeeding sessions are successful as some mothers experience a few roadblocks. Sometimes, emotions get in the way because of the 360º changes occurred to their bodies, lifestyle and outlook. These changes are part and parcel of the whole motherhood experience.

One of the best things to do is to let your family and close friends know about your thoughts. It will be surprising that there are attentive ears, which are more than willing to listen, so as the able pairs of hands who can assist whenever you need it.

Always remember that a great support system (that does not judge or guilt) is a must for every mother – whether she breastfeeds or not.
